Cornish All Blacks 34 Sedgley Park 31

The Cornish All Blacks picked up their first win of the season with this narrow late win over Sedgley Park with an injury time try.

Winger Jon Fabian gave the home side the lead on just two minutes and Stuart Alred converted for 7-0. Flanker Jon Ponton got the first Park score nine minutes later to get the visitors on the scoreboard. On 20 minutes the home side were over for a second try as right wing Matt Jess touched down and Alred converted for 14-5. Seven minutes later and Park prop Petrus Du Plessis went over to get back within four points of the home side.

With half time approaching scrum half Sam Alford went over and Alred converted to make it 21-10. On half time Park were still in the game when player coach Tim Fourie went over and they were six adrift at 21-15.

In the third quarter Alred and half time replacement Phil Jones exchanged penalty goals before Jones went in for a try and with the conversion gave his side a narrow 25-24 lead. On 70 minutes Alred gave the home side the lead again but Jones looked to have given Park the win with two penalty goals to make it 31-27 on 80 minutes.

But four minutes into injury time the home side snatched the win when prop Richard Liddington went over for a score and Alred converted. Park did leave with a couple of bonus point but were disappointed to lose so late on. 

 

Pertemps Bees 11 Plymouth Albion 35

Bees: Try: Maggs (42). Pens: Hook 2 (11, 39) 

Albion: Tries: Hayes (28), Owen (35), Kettle (71), Lewsey (74). Cons: Laidlaw 3. Pens: Laidlaw 3 (8, 50, 57)   

Plymouth Albion picked up their second win of the season and sent the Bees to their third straight defeat of the season and they remain pointless at the bottom of the table.

Ross Laidlaw kicked Albion into a 3-0 lead on eight minutes. Mike Hook levelled for the Bees three minutes later. Albion were over the home try line on 28 minutes when lock Tom Hayes went over to make it 8-3 but it was 15-3 seven minutes later when hooker James Owen went over and Laidlaw converted. Just before half time Hook pulled three points back for the Bees.

Two minutes into the second half and the Bees were right back in it when centre Ashley Maggs went over to make it a four point game.

That though was their last contribution to the scoreboard with Albion dominating the rest of the match. Laidlaw put over a couple of penalty goals before sealing the win in the final ten minutes with tries form No 8 Adam Kettle and scrum half Ed Lewsey to take the win and the try bonus point to go fifth in thee table. 

 

Exeter Chiefs 62 Rotherham Titans 10

Chiefs: Tries: Blythe (6), Breeze 2 (15, 41), Miller (21), Slade (30), Drauniniu 2 (55, 72), M Fatialofa (66), Yapp (78), Luff (80). Cons: Gray, Yapp 5.   

Titans: Grissing (24). Con: Whitehead. Pen: Whitehead (36). 

Comfortable win for Exeter Chiefs over the Titans running in ten tries to maintain their 100% start to the season.

The home side were over the Titans try line in the 6th minute when hooker Sam Blythe went over and they led 5-0. Tries from full back Ben Breeze and flanker Alan Miller and with Danny Gray putting over a conversion they were 17-0 ahead. Winger Stephen Grissing got the visitors off the mark with a 24th minute try and Mike Whitehead added the extras. But on the half hour mark the Chiefs had the try bonus point in the bag with their other flanker Chad Slade going over.

In the second half it was one way traffic with the home side running in six unanswered tries ass Breeze went onto complete a double and left wing Josh Drauniniu bagging a brace. Tony Yapp on for Danny Gray converted the last five tries with 100% success rate.        

 

Northampton Saints 68 Moseley 12

Saints: Tries: Everitt (2), Visser (23), Diggin (30), Lewitt (40), Ward 2 (40, 52), Hopley (42), Reihana (69), Robinson (77), Ashton (80). Cons: Everitt 6, Reihana 3. 

Moseley: Tries: Bressington (17), Foster (490. Con: Jones.  

Northampton Saints made it three wins out of three and kept top spot on points difference form Doncaster after running in 10 tries.

They scored five in the first half and with Everitt converting four of them they were 33-5 ahead with right wing Nathan Bressington getting the Moseley try. The only player to get two on a day of nine different try scorers was hooker Dave Ward with a try in each half. Former Wigan RL full back Chris Ashton came on for winger Tim Visser and went over for the Saint’s final try in injury time.  

 

Coventry 16 Cornish Pirates 17

Coventry: Try: Sanders (24). Con: Russell. Pens: Russell 3 (7, 40, 69) 

Pirates: Tries: Buckley (21), Cracknell (80). Cons: Steenson 2. Pen: Steenson (40).  

Cornish Pirates returned to winning ways after last Sunday’s defeat at home to Northampton. They left it late and snatched the win when flanker Chris Cracknell went over 14 minutes into injury time and Gareth Steenson kicked the winning conversion.

The home side were first on the scoreboard with Ben Russell putting over a 7th minute penalty goal. On 21 minutes the Pirates were in front when centre Nick Buckley went over and Steenson converted. Three minutes later and the home side were ahead again with a try from centre Donovan Sanders and Russell added the extras. Late in the half Russell and Steenson exchanged penalty goals and the home side went in 13-10 ahead.

It took 29 minutes of the second half for the first score of the half with Russell putting over a penalty goal and give Cov a six point lead, which they kept till deep into injury time when the Pirates nicked it.   

 

Newbury 22 Doncaster 49

Newbury: Tries:  Simpson Daniel (56), Hayter (67), Perkins (77). Cons: Walsh 2. Pen: Walsh (10).

Doncaster: Tries: Tomes (2), Hunt 2 (8, 42), Boden (18), Griffiths (24), Bishop (35), Woodrow (80). Cons: Woodrow 7.  

Doncaster made it three wins out of three and maximum points by picking up their third try bonus point of the season. They were quick out of the blocks with two tries in the first eight minutes with second row Sean Tomes and centre Brad Hunt touching down and Mark Woodrow converting both of them. Tim Walsh pulled three points back for the home side Hooker Steve Boden and second row David Griffiths to make it 28-3 after 24 minutes and they had the try bonus point wrapped up. Tries either side of half time saw Doncaster go 42-3 ahead. Newbury did manage a three try burst of their own, but it was too late at this stage.  Doncaster had the last say as fly half Mark Woodrow went over and added the conversion to make it seven out of seven.

Newbury lost for the third time this season and are second bottom of the table.

 

Esher 28 London Welsh 16

Esher: Tries: Starling (28), Barrell (62), Goldsmith (72). Cons: Hallett. Pens: Hallett 3 (5, 49, 70). 

Welsh: Tries: Strong (13), Kwasnicki (60). Pens: Morgan 2 (39, 45): 

Esher picked up their first win of the season with this 12 point win.

Neil Hallett gave them the lead with a 5th minute penalty goal but it was the Welsh who scored next with winger James Strong going in for a try on 13 minutes to give the Welsh the lead.

Just before the half hour mark and the home side were back in front as flanker Lee Starling went over and Hallett converted for 10-5. Gareth Morgan pulled three points back for the Welsh before half time to send then in two points down 

Morgan kicked them ahead five minutes into the second half but it last just four minutes before Hallett replied for the home side. On the hour mark the Welsh were back in front as hooker Adam Kwasnicki went over for a try and a 16-13 lead for the visitors.

It took Esher just two minutes to reply with No 8 Don Barrell going over the Welsh line and Hallett converted for 20-16. Hallett increased the lead on 70 minutes with his third penalty goal of the match. The wrapped up the match two minutes later when replacement hooker Simon Goldsmith went over. The referee had a busy afternoon with five players spending time in the sin bin, two from the home time and three for the visitors.  

 

Nottingham 31Bedford Blues 16

Nottingham: Tries: Sherriff 2 (21, 67), Molenaar (39), Dodge (55). Cons: Barlow 4. Pen: Barlow (52). 

Bedford: Try: Page (16). Con: Elrick. Pens: Elrick 3 (13, 51, 59)   

Nottingham made it two wins in three matches as Bedford Blues slip to their first defeat of the season.

The Blues were in front on 13 minutes when Jon Elrick put over a penalty goal and it was 10-0 three minutes later when he converted a try from winger Alby Page.

The home side were on the scoreboard on 21 minutes when flanker Luke Sherriff went over and Tom Barlow converted. They led at the break as well when centre Tim Molenaar went over and Barlow converted just before the half time whistle to lead 14-13.

Elrick pulled three points back on 51 minutes but Barlow replied immediately for the home side   

They went two scores clear when centre Alex Dodge went over a few minutes later and Barlow again converted for 24-13.

Elrick put over a third penalty goal before Nottingham wrapped up the win on 67 minutes when Sherriff completed a double and Barlow added the extras and the bonus point was secured.
