SP under 15s took on Bury in an exciting game which the visitors won with a late try.

The only score of a scrappy first quarter was a Tom Egan penalty for Sedgley, Bury having missed a similar chance at the other end. The visitors had already shown glimpses of handling skills, and they took the lead as the ball was moved quickly for a score in the left corner.

Egan’s second sweetly struck penalty gave Sedgley a 6-5 advantage at the end of a poor first half.

The second half was altogether better. Sedgley had a marginal advantage up front but the handling skills of the Bury boys were much superior. Time and again they ran at Sedgley, and time and again the home team tackled them.

With just five minutes remaining, the Bury team put together an outstanding try, converted from the touchline. Sedgley came back strongly but were behind 6-12 at the final whistle.

Sedgley’s under 16 opponents were Bolton who, as expected, put up a good fight. Bolton are a competent side, without quite having the fire-power to challenge Sedgley, a situation not helped when they lost their captain to injury inside the first minute.

SP led 21-3 at half-time, tries by Josh Nivern, Jonathan Marr and Richard Newman, all converted by Alex Reilly. There had been flashes of good rugby, but too much loose, unstructured play.

Two more tries in the second half, both scored by Lewis McKay, stretched Sedgley’s lead to 33-3, and this proved the final score as brave Bolton finished strongly.

The under 14s had no scheduled game, but the under 13s lost their Junior Challenge game 5-24 at Vale of Lune.

No game for the Junior Colts as Kirkby Lonsdale cried off the fixture, but our Senior Colts travelled to Sandbach where they lost 3-38 against the league’s second-placed team.
