The Sedgley 4th XV, or 13 of them, marched out on Saturday against an equal numbered Broughton Park side.
With Broughton Park having no front row (meaning uncontested scummaging) and their team bolstered by fast paced Manchester University students, from the outset the game was always going to be tough for the far-from-svelte frames of the Tigers.
And it was from the outset of the game that the onslaught started. The first kick off resulted in a darting run from the BP backs who side-stepped and danced their way thorough to the Sedgley try line, a place from which the Tigers would spend some time during the first half hour.
However, it quickly became apparent that the best approach against this BP team was the old "stick it up your jumper" which the boys took to well and yards were made quickly.
The BP side were certainly not prepared or big enough in stature to compete with such an approach and the line was broken time and again. However, they soon realised the esteemed Referee was not paying much attention to the rule book and hands were in at every ruck stealing ball at every opportunity.
This was much to the dislike of SP scrum half Ashley Rawlinson who decided to pick on the only sizeable player on the BP team, a man-mountain of a second row who, after a good shoeing that was much deserved, took great exception to being used as a door mat. The game restarted following a bit of handbag action, five minutes after which, the same man-mountain was shown the yellow for a blatant kick to the head of the Sedgley no 9.
Despite constant pressure from the Sedgley forwards throughout the game, they were unable to break through to the BP try line and with the speed and agility of the BP backs, the game finished as a white wash - the scoreline (43-0) most definitely flattering the victorious team.
The 4th XV now move on to the cup game against Congleton at the weekend.
