The downpour of Saturday night made the backfield pitches unplayable, so there was no junior action at Sedgley Park on Sunday.

The Junior Colts were able to switch their scheduled league game to the ground of their opponents, Eccles, where the pitch was in excellent condition. Weather conditions were unfriendly, however, with rain driven on a strong cross-wind, and the game was more 1950s than 2000s; one for the enthusiast.

There was little to choose between the teams, and much honest effort. Two players rose above the conditions, the Eccles number 10 and the Sedgley 9; both cleverly used the wind to keep their teams moving forward. Eccles had some small and elusive runners, Sedgley some big and powerful ones, but no clear scoring chances were created in the first half.

The wind and rain relented slightly after half-time but the stalemate continued until near the end when Eccles kicked a penalty awarded for a high tackle. Almost immediately, a hanging high kick by Matt Bradley was superbly marked under extreme pressure by the Eccles full-back, five metres from his own line.

With the last kick of the game Pete Molyneux had one chance to force a draw, but his 35-metre penalty kick faded just wide of the right post.

Final result: Eccles 3 Sedgley 0.

As far as I know this was the only game to beat the weather.
