In the period since the last round-up our four Junior teams have all been in Lancashire Challenge action.
The under 13s continue to impress and may yet make the Cup quarter finals despite those two early season defeats. Our lads had too much power for visitors Liverpool St Helens and won 30-0*.
Ty Newall (pictured) scored three of the tries. LSH had their moments but were kept at bay by some good SP tackling.
Our under 14s maintained their 100% record in the competition, beating Ormskirk 12-10, away, but the under 15s went down 5-21 at Bolton.
The under 16 game was a cracker, at Park Lane against Manchester. Playing on the main pitch, our boys ran out 31-5 winners, which gives entirely the wrong impression! The score was only 7-5 until late in the game, but the visitors fell apart in the final few minutes.
It was high quality rugby, played in great spirit, marred only by uncontested scrums. Manchester use this tactic regularly (allegedly) to cover the weakness of their front five, but their backs are very strong.
*reported score
The under 17 Junior Colts lost 0-49 at Kirkby Lonsdale, the margin of defeat being surprising considering KL’s moderate results previously. Our boys have a chance to make amends on Sunday (Jan 6) at Fylde, a team we have beaten previously this season.
The under 19 Senior Colts lost 0-36 at home to high-flying Sandbach, but last Sunday they bounced back with a 28-17 win at Eccles. Tries were scored by Tom Leader, Jonny Dauncey and Rees Byrne of the U17s.
Chris Leader reports: Excellent discipline, a strong defence and a good forward pack was the difference between the two teams. Sedgley’s spirited display was deserving of a victory. Thomas Leader found his kicking form with excellent positional kicking and penalty kicks. All round fantastic performance by all players 1 – 15.
Credit must go to the four young lads who came up from the Junior Colts.
The Senior Colts, too, are in action this Sunday, away at Glossop, a tough fixture.
Best wishes for 2008 for all our age-group teams. You can read the various Junior Managers’ half-term reports in Wilky’s Newsletter.
