JUNIOR & COLTS ROUND-UP - 10/02/08

The only Junior match at Park Lane was the under 14 fixture against Leigh, an entertaining and good quality game in glorious spring conditions.

Sedgley, who scored first through centre Jack Faulkner, were generally on top in the early stages, but other chances were not taken and Leigh reduced the arrears with a penalty goal. On the stroke of half-time the visitors scored a try to take the lead 8-5.

A somewhat dubious try early in the second half, awarded by Peter Keers on his welcome (whatever Bob Sharpe says) and much publicised return to refereeing ranks gave Leigh a 13-5 lead. However, Sedgley dominated the closing twenty minutes.

Faulkner followed up a kick to score and then, from a tap-penalty, Dominic Barrow was quick to spot a gap in Leigh ranks. Faulkner converted for a 17-13 Sedgley victory.

Away from Park Lane, our under 16s travelled to St Helens to play West Park. We had ten or more players unavailable but still managed to get fifteen out on the pitch, and they proved too strong for the home team.

Sedgley led 17-0 at half-time despite spending 80% of the time defending in their own half, and defending well. Two break-outs, forwards and backs interpassing nicely, brought tries for Jonathan Marr and Sean Marsh, and an brilliant dummy by scrum-half Louis Singleton led to his try; Axel Spencer-Anforth converted.

The second half  brought advantages of breeze and slope and Sedgley were under little pressure. Two further tries were scored, by winger Marr again and by Spencer-Anforth, playing centre on his welcome return to the side; he also converted both. West Park kicked a late penalty goal.

The under 13s were at Widnes; no report received.

Our under 15s had no game.

This coming Sunday our U14s play Warrington in a Lancashire play-off, at Park Lane. If they win they go into the Challenge Cup; lose and they are in the Plate competition.

The other Junior sides face Brodleians, a tough fixture. Year in year out Brods seem to produce some of the best teams in Yorkshire.

I’ve been trying to sort out the mystery surrounding the Senior Colts’ fixtures.

Firstly, their Lancashire Cup match was played but, for reasons unknown to me, it was played away at Widnes when SP were drawn at home. We  lost 6-22 and are out of a competition we had a very real chance of winning.

The floodlit match I had expected to see last Wednesday has been rescheduled for next Wednesday, Feb 20th; that’s against Eccles. But this Wednesday we are also at home against Leigh, an ‘away’ fixture that has been switched to Park Lane. On Sunday the team travels to Caldy.

Hope I’ve got it right this time.

Finally, the Junior Colts. Following the excitement of the victory against Blackpool, they travelled in good spirits to Warrington, but were beaten 7-37. They play bottom club Bury on Sunday, at Park Lane.
