Our Senior Colts played Leigh in a rearranged league match, under lights at Park Lane, last Wednesday. The visitors scored a late try to win a competitive game 19-12.
With under 17s making up the majority of their pack, Sedgley did well to hold the bigger Leigh outfit, but the team was always under pressure. Dom Köhler scored a try but the Leigh forwards drove over in immediate reply; 5-5 at half-time.
Leigh broke away from a maul 30 metres out to take a 12-5 lead, but Sedgley hit back with a try by Sean O’Connor and it seemed that the game would end 12-12 until, with the last play of the game, the big Leigh lock broke away from deep inside his own half.
Sedgley Colts are beginning to struggle for numbers and Sunday’s game at Caldy had to be called off. However, there is another game at Park Lane scheduled for Wednesday evening, Feb 20th, Eccles the visitors. The final league game is at Kendal on Sunday.
When the Colts’ league season finishes, the League Cup competitions begin, with a preliminary round for the U17s on March 2nd and the first round for the U19s a fortnight later.
Our U17 Junior Colts played their final league match at home to bottom club Bury. There was a gap in ability between the sides and Sedgley scored an early try through big Josh Birtwistle.
After an untidy passage of play Sedgley put together some good rugby to score twice more before half-time, Mark Balaban and Todd Keers, with Matt Bradley’s conversion making it 17-0.
Jack Giladi scored from a well worked line-out move early in the second half, but the team lost focus in a messy half of rugby. The only try was a fine individual effort by stand-off Connor Malloy, though Bury would have scored a deserved consolation try had their centre not run over the dead ball line. Final score 27-0.
Sunday’s Junior games fell victim to the frozen pitches, with the exception of the under 14s whose Lancs Cup qualifying match was put back one hour. Facing Warrington, Sedgley found themselves in the unusual situation of playing a team smaller than themselves.
Warrington began well in the forwards but Sedgley held all the aces behind the pack. Sam Horrocks’ 70 metre effort was the first of four before the interval, when Sedgley led 26-0, and when James Wharmby wriggled over for a try early in the second half the game was over as a contest under competition rules.
Sedgley now face Manchester, away, in the first round of the Challenge Cup on March 2nd.
