ImageAFTER dominating the opening quarter and taking the lead through a Phil Jones’ penalty, the Tigers were then overtaken by an expansive Pirates side that ran in six tries to claim the expected five-point win.

Tigers had the final say though, with top try scorer Chris Briers running in league touchdown number 11, as the Tigers ran at the home defence from every conceivable position.

With the wind behind them they started the stronger of the two, pinning the Pirates into their own half for much of the opening 20 minutes.

They were awarded a penalty just 20 metres from the Pirates’ posts on five minutes and Jones stroked the kick over to give the visitors an early lead.

Stung into action the Pirates ran the ball, searching for gaps and on occasion found them, only to be let down by unforced handling errors in their haste to get the scoreboard revolving.

For the Tigers Jones harnessed the wind to produce a good kicking game, while with the ball in hand the centre pairing of Freeman Payne and Luther Burrell along with flanker Juan Crous made inroads into Pirates’ territory.

However, on 20 minutes wing Jimmy Moore spun out of a tackle and hared down the right-hand channel, slipping an inside pass to lock Bruce Cumming. He in turn fed the other wing, Tonga international Vunga Lilo, who had the simple task of trotting over the line in the right-hand corner to put his side in front, 5-3.

Five minutes later the Pirates doubled their lead. Moore once more led the charge and the ball eventually found fullback Adryan Winnan who went over in the left-hand corner; 10-3.

Tigers then suffered a blow when tackle-bustling runner Burrell took a blow to the neck and shoulder and was carried off on a spinal board as a precautionary measure, although he was later released from hospital after being checked over. He was replaced by Matt Riley.

The Pirates appeared unaffected by the 10-minute delay while Burrell was treated and from a five-metre scrum centre Steve Winn was given the opportunity to drive for the Tigers’ line and he was successful. Fly-half Ollie Thomas, no doubt praying for a conversion to go over, saw his effort rebound off a post and the Pirates had to make do with a 15-3 lead.

The Tigers reacted as though they’d been collectively hit on the head with a spoon and continued to drive away at the Pirates’ defence, with Crous and Jonny Roddam showing up well as the half drew to a close.

It continued after the restart with Crous held up over the Pirates’ line as the Tigers battled to claw back points.

After weathering the Tigers’ early second half storm the Pirates got back into their groove, Chris Cracknell taking a short pass from backrow colleague Sam Betty to go over under the posts, improve by Thomas and the Pirates led 22-3.

On the hour they tightened their grip further when replacement hooker Darren Dawidiuk took and inside pass on the burst to run in try number five, again converted by Thomas.

With 10 minutes to go the Pirates rounded off their scoring after pouncing on a turnover with Moore sprinting down centrefield and go over under the posts. Thomas’s third conversion made it 36-3.

Yet the Tigers did not give up and continued to run the ball from everywhere. With the final whistle seconds away they mounted a series of cross-field charges with Riley, Payne and Petrus Du Plessis taking play right, where Briers popped up to outpace his marker and go over in the right-hand corner to round off a determined performance.
